At Vegan Book Club, our unofficial motto is “read vegan.”
That’s why I created the community anyway: to provide a space where plant-based bookworms from around the world could come together and read and discuss vegan-related and animal-friendly books (or anything else, really). Being vegan (or vegetarian, for that matter) isn’t as weird as it once was. As more and more plant-based products hit the grocery stores, the same is happening on bookshelves.
In novels (say Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert), protagonists are more than just your average animal lover; they’re also vegetarian. VegNews recently published their Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan, and TikTok superstar and vegan actress Tabitha Brown is set to release two books, including a vegan cookbook, in the next year with publisher William Morrow at the helm.
It’s refreshing to see veganism being taking seriously in books. After all, when I started Vegan Book Club in 2019, it was after my complete and total exasperation at how vegans and vegetarians were being negatively represented in the books I had been reading.
And now we’re expanding a little bit.
Read Vegan is a zine for and by plant-based bookworms, a formal place for vegan readers to talk about these books, which maybe don’t necessarily fit in with Vegan Book Club’s reading schedule.
Did you read a novel that featured a vegan or vegetarian character and want to rave (or rant) about it? Is there a book that majorly changed the way you look at your plate? Are you a vegan author who wants to share your journey to publication, hardships and all? Or maybe even be interviewed? Maybe you read a book where the characters at something that had you drooling and you had to recreate it and now want to share the recipe?
Send us a pitch with your idea – we’d love to hear about it!
